Highland Cemetery
Sparta, White County, Tennessee

      JOSEPH LAFAYETTE ("Fate") QUARLES (1843-1947), grandson of William Pennington and Ann Hawes Quarles,
was the tenth child of William Hawes and Ruth Hyder Quarles.  He and his wife,
Sarah Jane Hunter Quarles (1846-1923), are buried in the Highland Cemetery on Highland Avenue,
just a few blocks southeast of the White County Court House in Sparta, Tennessee.

      A short distance from the main entrance a large stone bearing the name "Hunter" can be seen a few yards from the entrance road.



      The Quarles-Hunter section is marked with cornerstones and flat step stones

     On Memorial Day, May, 2008, flags were placed at the cemetery.  A Confederate flag marked "Uncle Fate's" burial site.
